Summer Treats for Healthy Teeth

The Best Summer Treats for Your Teeth

Summer is the perfect time to load up on tooth-friendly snacks! Here are a few tasty options that are actually good for your teeth:

  • Crunchy fruits and veggies like apples, carrots, and celery help clean your teeth naturally and boost saliva flow.
  • Dairy products like cheese and yogurt are full of calcium and phosphates to strengthen enamel.
  • Nuts and seeds, especially almonds, are low in sugar and full of nutrients.
  • Water is the best drink for your smile—keep it flowing all summer!

The Worst Summer Treats for Your Teeth

Some popular summer indulgences aren’t so great for your oral health:

  • Sugary drinks (like soda, sweet tea, and sports drinks) feed bacteria and wear away enamel.
  • Ice cream and frozen treats can trigger sensitivity and lead to decay from all that sugar.
  • Sticky sweets like caramels and gummies cling to teeth and are hard to clean off.
  • Citrus fruits and juices are high in acid and can erode enamel over time.

Book a Scale and Polish for Added Benefit

A professional scale and polish can clear away plaque and tartar that brushing alone can’t remove. It’s also a great way to keep your teeth looking bright for all your summer selfies! Book with Parkway Restorative Dentistry for a thorough clean and a fresh start to the season.

Tips for a Healthy Summer Smile

  • Brush twice a day and floss daily, no matter what’s on your schedule.
  • Rinse your mouth with water after eating sugary or acidic foods.
  • Use fluoride toothpaste to keep your enamel strong.
  • Visit your dentist for a summer check-up before issues arise.

Maintaining Oral Hygiene While Traveling

Vacation is a break from routine—but your teeth still need care. Here's how to stay on top of it while on the go:

  • Pack a dental travel kit (toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, mouthwash).
  • Stick to your routine—brush morning and night no matter where you are.
  • Chew sugar-free gum when brushing isn’t possible to help clean teeth.
  • Stay hydrated to help rinse your mouth naturally.

Hydration and Oral Health

Water is your summer smile’s best friend. Here’s why:

  • It rinses away food and bacteria after meals.
  • Promotes saliva production, which neutralizes acids and protects enamel.
  • Helps prevent dry mouth, especially if you’re taking allergy meds or spending time in the heat.
  • Add water-rich fruits like watermelon and cucumbers to your diet for a hydration boost.

Enjoying Summer Treats Responsibly

You don’t have to give up your favorite treats—just enjoy them wisely!

  • Pick healthier alternatives like fruit, yogurt, or nuts when possible.
  • Rinse with water after sweets or acidic foods.
  • Brush after indulging, especially if the treat is sticky or sugary.
  • Keep moderation in mind—a little goes a long way when it comes to sugar.

Managing Seasonal Allergies

Allergy season can mess with your mouth, especially when meds dry it out. Try this:

  • Drink lots of water to keep your mouth moist.
  • Use a humidifier at home to combat dry air.
  • Choose sugar-free cough drops or lozenges.
  • Rinse your mouth after taking medication to clear away residue.

Be Prepared and Enjoy Your Summer

Taking a few extra steps can help keep your teeth healthy so you can focus on the fun. Whether you’re headed to a BBQ, the beach, or a road trip, remember:

  • Pack your dental essentials.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Eat smart.
  • Keep your dentist appointments.

At Parkway Restorative Dentistry, we’re here to help you keep your smile bright all summer long. Whether you need a check-up, cleaning, or have a concern, we’re just a call away.

A: Water is the best choice! It hydrates, rinses your mouth, and helps avoid the sugar and acid found in sodas and juices.

A: Rinse your mouth with water and use sugar-free gum until you can brush. Try to buy a toothbrush as soon as you can.

One of the most important issues to protect a patient’s privacy and collect the most amount from your insurance is to make sure we keep up to date with our patient’s data. In order to do that many times we will ask for you to provide us with an identification card, insurance card, or update our privacy forms. This is why we ask you to provide this information at each appointment. I wanted to take a minute to explain why we do these things and how they benefit our patients: Identification Cards: ID Cards are one of the best ways to protect our patient’s privacy and maximize their insurance benefits. By keeping an ID on file we have a reference for that person as well as their signature. If someone ever came to the office claiming to be someone they are not they could possible steal your information. Furthermore, having an ID on file can sometimes help us file claims faster with insurance if there is any missing information in the chart Insurance Cards: Many people may work at one company for many years and see their dental benefits change almost annually. Not only do companies change dental insurance providers, they also can change plan types, benefit levels, and even the type of services covered! Finally, the date on when your insurance “renews” also changes. Previously almost all insurances followed the calendar year January to December, but now these changes can happen at almost any time. By collecting this information and being able to verify your benefits we make sure you get what you deserve! Updated Forms: Perhaps the most important form in our office is the Patient Privacy form. It allows us to discuss treatment with you as well as any other people you may want (spouses, children, parents, etc) but, we must have explicit permission to do so. On top of that, we want you to know that we take your data and your privacy seriously and want to protect you from any one stealing your data and this part of that process. Thank you for understanding why we ask for this information. It may sometimes seem strange or invasive but everything we do and will always do is for the benefit of our patients and to make your dental experience as safe and secure as possible!
